Biography of Peter J. Kragel, M.D.
Peter J. Kragel, M.D. received his baccalaureate degree from Johns Hopkins University and his MD from Georgetown University. He completed his residency training at the University of Maryland Hospital, and is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Dr. Kragel served four years in the Navy at the National Naval Medical Center, and attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Dr. Kragel has a proven track record in medical education and administration and management in complex organizations. He is Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at East Carolina University, and also serves as the department's Residency Program Director and as the Clinical Director of the East Carolina University Telemedicine Center.
He is a member of the Association of Pathology Chairs and an elected member of its Program Directors (PRODS) Council and Vice Chairman of the Graduate Medical Education Committee. He is active on the Pitt County Community College Board of Trustees and chairs its Policy and Program Committee. He is the Secretary of the Universal Service Administrative Company Board, Washington, DC, and Chair of its Executive Compensation Committee.
Dr. Kragel is the Councilor for North Carolina for the Southern Medical Association, and is the Chair of its Scientific Advisory and Quality Committees. He is the past-president of the ECU Chapter of Sigma Xi. He has over fifteen years experience as a department chair, and served as Interim Dean of the ECU Brody School of Medicine from January 2001 through October 2003.
He maintains a clinical practice focused on surgical pathology, and is a member of the Arthur Purdy Stout Society of Surgical Pathologists, as well as other professional organizations. Dr. Kragel has over seventy-five scholarly publications.
